At Lucas Vale it is our intent for D&T to offer children the chance to use critical thinking skills and creativity within a defined purpose and tangible outcome. The children in our school are provided with the opportunity to work with a range of materials both individually and collaboratively. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a process of designing and making, and its real-life applications. They work in a range of contexts through our half termly focuses which allows for cross curricular links to be made.
D&T is taught for each year group in two half terms throughout the year and during a themed week. Construction is during one half term, textiles, and cooking and nutrition are in the same half term but this is because D&T is given double the time due to our carnival theme. Mechanics and Electrics form the basis for our D&T week.
We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. In our design projects, pupils are encouraged to design for themselves, use research and sketches as aides, make using a variety of tools and materials, while we work on our ability to evaluate our end products, and therefore build on our technical knowledge. Every year group is encouraged to complete one STEM project as a means of assessing our understanding of the skills we have worked on. Furthermore, as part of their work with food, pupils eagerly explore how to cook and will apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating in what they create.
The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
• develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
• build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
• critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
• understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
